A blocked drain is one of those problems that rarely fixes itself — and the longer you leave it, the worse it gets. I unblock drains every single day across the Sutherland Shire, from kitchen sinks and bathroom drains to stormwater lines and sewer mains. I carry the right equipment for every type of blockage, I'm upfront about pricing, and I clean up before I leave.
Signs Your Drain Is Blocked
The warning signs are usually clear once you know what to look for:
- Water draining slowly in sinks, showers or bathtubs
- Gurgling sounds from drains or toilets
- Unpleasant smells rising from the drain
- Toilets that are slow to flush or water rising near the rim
- Water pooling in the yard after rain (stormwater blockage)
- Multiple drains backing up at the same time — usually a main line blockage
Don't wait until the drain stops completely. A partial blockage will become a full one, and a full one can mean sewage backing up into your home. Call me when you first notice the signs.
How I Clear Blocked Drains
I don't just plunge and hope for the best. Depending on the type and location of the blockage, I use:
- Electric eel (drain snake) — effective for hair, soap build-up and general organic matter in smaller pipes
- High-pressure water jetter — blasts away grease, tree roots and stubborn blockages in larger lines. The most thorough clean you can get
- CCTV drain camera inspection — sends a camera down the pipe so I can see exactly what's there and where. I show you the footage and explain it in plain language before recommending any work
The CCTV camera is particularly valuable when blockages keep coming back, or when I need to check the condition of older clay or cast iron pipes. There's no point jetting a pipe that has cracked or collapsed — the camera tells me whether clearing is the right fix or whether a pipe repair or reline is needed.
Why Blocked Drains Are So Common in the Sutherland Shire
The Sutherland Shire has a lot of housing built in the 1950s, 60s and 70s — and that era of construction used clay earthenware pipes for sewer lines. Clay pipes have a limited lifespan and are susceptible to two main failure modes: cracking from ground movement and root intrusion from nearby trees.
Established fig trees, jacarandas, camphor laurels and large garden trees send roots searching for water and nutrients. Old clay pipe joints are the perfect entry point — a hairline crack in a joint lets a root tip in, and that root grows over years until it causes a partial or complete blockage. I see this pattern constantly across Cronulla, Gymea, Jannali, Miranda and dozens of other Shire suburbs.
Even in newer suburbs where PVC was used, grease accumulation in kitchen waste lines and scale build-up in older pipes are regular causes of blocked drains. Kitchen drain blockages are almost always avoidable — but once they're blocked, the jetter fixes them quickly.
What to Expect When I Arrive
When I get to your property for a blocked drain job, I'll first ask a few questions about what you've noticed — which drains are affected, how long it's been building up, and whether it's happened before. This gives me a good starting picture before I start looking.
I then inspect the affected area, identify the most likely cause, and explain what I'm going to do before I start. I give you a free upfront quote — no work starts without your approval. Once you're happy to proceed, I clear the blockage, test the drains to make sure they're flowing properly, and clean up completely before I leave.
Everything I do is backed by my lifetime labour warranty. If the same issue returns because of my workmanship, I'll come back and fix it at no charge.
