A blocked toilet is never convenient, and the temptation to keep flushing and hope for the best usually just makes things worse. If your toilet is draining slowly, gurgling, or threatening to overflow, it's time to call a plumber — and it's rarely as complicated or expensive as people fear. At Primary Plumbing Solutions we handle blocked toilets every day across the Sutherland Shire, and in most cases we have them flowing again the same day.
What Causes a Blocked Toilet?
The most common culprits we find are things that shouldn't have been flushed in the first place. Even products labelled "flushable" often don't break down properly and cause blockages further down the line. Common causes include:
- Wet wipes and baby wipes — the biggest offender by far
- Cotton buds, sanitary items, and nappy liners
- Foreign objects (kids' toys are a classic)
- Excessive toilet paper building up in the S-bend
- Partial blockages in the drain that have been building up over time
- Tree root intrusion further down the sewer line
How We Clear It
We start with the least invasive method and work up from there. For most blockages in the toilet itself, a plunger or hand auger is all it takes. If the blockage is deeper in the drain, we'll use an electric eel (drain snake) to break it up and clear the pipe. For stubborn build-up or root intrusion, high-pressure water jetting cuts through the problem and leaves the pipe clean. We'll let you know what we're doing before we do it, and the price is agreed upfront. If you notice slow flushing, gurgling after the flush, or a toilet that seems to be rising higher than normal — don't keep flushing. Call us and we'll have a look.
